Before and after meme by Xuiology Before and after meme by Xuiology
:giggle:
Talk about a massive style change.

Fun fact:
I never used to draw people of ethnic backgrounds till I reached High School. The picture on the left is my first one even remotely close to someone who was not intended to be white or "Asian". I had just made 14 when I made that picture.

Why?
-P: I was just getting good at anime (as good as THAT will ever look) and it was difficult to draw in an anime style for different races for me at the time. In a nutshell: Not enough skill

She looks like she's from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Very nice work!

Hi! thank you for the kind words but I'd like to give a friendly reminder that while you may mean well, it's very annoying (and a bit rude) to tell other artists that their word "is like" or "reminds" one of a popular tv show.  Especially when artists work hard to develop their own style. It's hurtful and stressful to hear! My work was not an is not influenced by AtlA even though I do like the show ( ledgend of korra not so much ).

I honestly don't see how she fits into the world as the clothing styles are very specific. Fire benders don't wear that much gold jewelry or yellows and she's not wearing enough clothes to be an air bender (monk... person...).

In short, please take the time to understand that telling an artist that their work is like someone else's is not a compliment and perhaps read the artist comments to see if the likeness was intentional (if it was not, you may want to keep it to yourself.)  but I thank you for liking my work.

Oh, I'm sorry if I offended you. I've said those kinds of things to other artists and they didn't get offended, but I suppose everyone is different. I usually take it as a compliment when someone compares me to another artist. I wasn't suggesting that you copied the style of The Last Airbender, there were just some features that I found similar. It is definitely a unique style though; I haven't seen anything quite like it.

Anyway, I really wasn't trying to offend you, but thanks for the advice. I'll try to be more careful when comparing artists to other artists. I wasn't aware that it could be taken as an insult, unless you say something like "OMG u totally ripped off ___'s style!!!111". I'll keep that in mind though!

Thank you for understanding.
Some artists may not say anything but it is on the list of most annoying things to say to an artist. I have a lot of friends who hate it but don't say anything. They either don't respond or say thank you. Developing as an artist I've learned, experienced, and observed the agitation that comes with a sentence that starts with the words "that reminds me of..."
I'm not offended nor do I believe you were implying that I copied. Of course this image was from 2011. Its not my current style so I'm not bothered or worried artistically.  However, your comment was the second comment implying AtlA  on this image and its honestly not the best comment to read. I personally feel like it's besides the point of this picture (that I'm surprised I still get activity on).  I'd rather a comment on the progression of the work (as what the picture is meant for in the first place) because it is a before and after meme of the first Person of color (or intended PoC)  I've ever drawn and as a person of color that means a lot to me. (as mentioned in the artist comments)  It contributes to the acceptance of myself and the gradual undoing of internalized racism that is placed in people of color from very young. If this image wasnt as much of a big deal to me, I would not have responded to be honest.
I suppose other artists are different in their reactions to these things and that's fine, but I think everyone appreciates more thought out comments when putting their work out their.
I thank you again for taking my response into consideration.

I didn't know that so many people were bothered by that! I do it a lot, so I'm a bit worried now! I've probably angered many people without even knowing. Although again, many artists I've said that to seem to genuinely appreciate it. If someone told me my artwork looked like Mark Crilley's, I'd be tickled pink. Though I can understand why someone would find it annoying and/or offensive. Like you said, I'll try to look in the descriptions to see if the artist said anything like; "This work was heavily influenced by _____'s style", before making such comments.

It's incredible how much better the "after" picture is. Suddenly all the proportions are right, the shading is amazing, I wish I could draw like that.
Maybe you could be so kind as to check my meme out as well: [link]
